BOBBYLOVEVILLE Heading to Italy photography question

The Mrs and I are heading to Italy in March and I am using the trip as an excuse to upgrade to a new camera. My question is really opinion and I want yours. Should I get the Rebel XTI that I really want for the trip, or should I just buy a lil point and shoot for the trip? I guess it hovers around dragging the rebel around but having great lens options and such or having a lil guy in my pocket that is very unobtrusive.......

thoughts?

Oh yeah, I also want to sell my Canon G5 that I've had since they came out. Whats a good, non-ebay way to dispose of cameras....anyone have luck selling them on craigslist, etc?

Ah - Bobby - wish I'd known yesterday.
I just bought a G5 on the classifieds at the Rangefinder Forum

rangefinderforum.com/

Lenses add up to lots of stuff to deal with when travelling. Unless you're specifically going there for photos - take the smallest camera you think you can get away with. You're there to have fun.

Personally - I'd keep (and take) the G5 - they're great cams. Almost every subcompact/pocket size one is going to be a step down in image quality, lens quality, and shutter speed (lag).

That said. I really like the Canon A series (not much smaller tho, really). The Sony W55 (does ok on sutter lag), and the Olympus Stylus bodies (weather resistant).

If you go the XTi route - look at getting an 18-200 ultra zoom or something - you sacrifice some image quality - but the convenience on the trip (one lens, no swapping) will be well appreciated. Maybe grab the 50/1.8 or 35/2 (roughly another $100) for low light/evening shots.

great feedback, your so right. I guess I just fell outta love with my G5 because ive had it for long.....you've rekindled my adoration of it!

Question, ive never attached a light to this camera or any of the lenses they make for it. Have you done this with the G5? Whats a good speedlight for all around shooting, assuming ill get a diffuser for it as well? I'd like to grab to a speedlight but also make sure it will work with the XTI as I will eventually get one of those this year.

Thanks for the input!

The Canon 430EX speedlight is probably the way to go. Compatible with the G series, and all the newer dSLRs - mid/high power. Adjustable, flexible and both bounces/diffuses well.

Not terribly cheap.

But it's good.

I personally haven't used any of the extra lenses for this camera - as a rule those add on lenses aren't much to write home about optically. But there have been exceptions over the years.

But if you're thinking of adding a dSLR down the line - I'd save the money to invest in glass for that.

Or just go Pentax and you can use any Pentax lens out there, even older non-AF ones...

When I went to Florida, I took both my Rebel XTi and my G5. I took the Rebel out when I was 'shooting photos' but I went to Disney World, etc. with the G5.

ps Get the Rebel you really want. big grin

Could you, would you, with a goat?

I highly recommend Florence.

Oh wait, you're asking about cameras. I still highly recommend Florence.

Go to Florence.
