Looking for the 12S brotherhood to help me out here.
Before my big move to France I had incorporated a company and was in the process of designing the logo/website/marketing etc.
My company name is Feral Design Solutions and the original ethos/idea behind the name was to play on the Feral side of things - a domesticated/tame animal reverting back to its wild state. Making web-sites less corporate or safe and making the designs a bit more 'animal' or street.
I had some ideas for logos and was exploring these with the help of Cone Graff. However, the move of country put this on the back-burner.
Now my target market is completely different and the logo ideas that I have are too aggressive - I will be aiming to hit the holiday home/gite owners /small businesses down here with simple websites with on-line booking/reservation systems. Most of these people are retirees or middle aged families.
I have toyed with other ideas - the area down here is big on hunting wild boar, so I have worked up several logos with wild boar motifs but everything I do keeps coming back to my initial thoughts for the company and end up being too aggressive. I have spent about month so far and feel that I am probably too close to it to step away and think less 'Ferally'.
So I am looking for some logo inspiration for a business called Feral Design Solutions.

I'm probably talking a load of crap and do bear in mind that logo design is by far my weakest area but as feral can also be applied to plants and flowers I was thinking more of an abstract swirly design for a logo but might be a bit too girly

I like the hunting motif - maybe think along the lines of old colonial africa - safari's etc. You can go very genteel a la the adventurer's club's (leather, mahogany, stuffed rhino's etc.)

Or you could think of feral as nature reclaiming something, like plants growing through cracks in the sidewalk...

You could also do something that has nothing to do with the definition of "Feral". I think you could get away with just doing a nice font treatment, maybe go minimalist with a really light font with tons of tracking.
The juxtaposition between the aggressive definition and the light font might work... Suzy's idea of flowering it up or using a swishy font might work as well, might give it a kind of surfy feel which I think would be right up your alley.
The company I work for now has a name that used to mean something, but is totally irrelevant since they moved offices. Seems to work for them

That's actually a really, really good point.
Techno - are you 100% on the logo icon idea or could you live with a logotype concept?
For that matter, you might think about doing something with the letter "f" ...
fwiw, I'd avoid " fds" - FDS is a well-known brand of "feminine hygiene spray", i.e. vaginal deodorant in N. America.

Thanks or the help so far.
I hadn't thought of feral flora - the area I'm living in is also well known for growing sunflowers - so there could be something there....

.
I've been playing with logo-type solutions too - but end up with something far too corporate feeling (in fact a couple had a very similar feel to silentsketch's 'eighty4' critique thread) - I need to get something that will appeal to the small independant 'mom & pop' types now.
I'm finding it difficult to step away from my original concept/idea for the company and 20+ years working in/for the corporate world.

haha - I didn't know that, I had spent a day or so playing around with various plays of FDS/fds - i'll drop that idea then

Thanks again all - I'll see what I can do on the flora front and look at different logo-type options (it could be that my font library is not broad enough in styles)
