anyone know why video embedded in flash would be shorter than the actual video clip itself? frame rate? compression?

have no personal exp, but it sounds like it must be a frame rate thing - like a video made at 24fps being played back in a SWF playing at 30fps?

exactly.
When you embed video it will play back at the same rate as your movie.
Either change the move frame rate to be the same as the video or encode the video as an flv to the desired frame rate (limited options) and import that.
