Finally getting some sort of inspiration for my logo.
just b&w at the moment - colour treatments after I get the basics finalised.
Hit me with your feedback and critiques - good or bad all welcome.

Not sure about the typeface. The R especially is problematic for me.
Edgy and raw looking - sure... but also almost unreadable, and a bit predictable given the name. Looks a bit like a low grade snowboard company.
I like the firey animal head element. But again, it's a bit literal.
Of the two, I prefer the bottom treatment.

The varying widths in the type are uncomfortable and hard to read. My eye keeps getting sucked in by the "i".
Maybe tweek the R and L in "Feral," then use a different typeface for "Design?"
I prefer the bottom design as well.

I'll echo what has been said above. I was reading it as "Fefal Design" and then said "WTF is Fefal?"
I prefer the lower layout to the upper one, and i do like the head...FWIW

Agreed on the legibility issues, looks like the lettering from Deep Space 9 a bit, too.
I like the single animal head though it's looking a tad "tribal tattoo"... If the mouth had a bit more detail it might look less like that.

top is my choice. It's more balanced, my eye see's the head and then naturally flows downwards. imo, the R in the top logo looks more like an R because overall the text is "seems" further away and you can read it from what appears as a step further back.
The R could be given a tighter curl in the top to make it look more R'ish and less F'ish?

I agree with tenPlus on the top choice... for some reason it seemed to work for me
loooking at the typography, I would just fix the "r" and go on from there
my coworker noticed the resemblence to the ThunderCats logo right away...
we had been talking about the ThunderCats the other day... I had no recollection of the logo myself... but you can see below, I think anyone who does know or remember the ThunderCats will see the resemblence right away.

Thanks for all the feedback.
The Thundercats must have come from some deep rooted childhood memory.
I'll play with the type some more - I'm thinking of dropping the 'design' part and just working with feral.
Anyone got any other font suggestions I might tweak and play with? I'll rework the 'r' anyway and post back later.

Ouch, good call, Walt!
Techno - How about something more hand-drawn looking, maybe even a kind of distressed look?
Feral immediately makes me think of something man-made or domesticated becoming wild (go figure) or i][reverting[/i] to a wild state, so I think something a bot more low-tech or roughed up might convey that idea.

Made some tweaks and variations. New images in original post at top.
Adjusted the R to look more R and less F in the original font. Played with a couple of other fonts and also adjusted the orientation of the logo slightly.
Also I may (haven't decided yet) work with a French translation - Conception Sauvage.
Getting closer?

WoW, I think you've got it.
For some reason a few of the new ones remind me of a car brand, prolly because my mind just wants to continue and read it as Ferrari.
I'm actually thinking tribal when I see the final but tribal.. feral, it's the same thing when it comes to your marketing purposes.
The two heads symbol has a classy look with the name projecting it in the direction you want (feral/rough/uncivilized). I'm color challenged and the color treatment still looks the part!

it's weird.
i like the finished pic with the gradients and emboss and such but in the b/w it seems off or something. i think it's because i expect the same rough strokes on the icon as well.
i noticed the thundercats feel but it also looked like the ferrari logo too. weird.
the finished one looks sweet tho, reminds me of a game company or something.

Maybe the final tweak - not sure which one to go with:
Nice and shiny
or this one with added distress
mclarkson 2008.03.30, 05:49PM —
I like the clean one best. I'd also maybe cheat the 'L' a little bit, as the bottom stroke gets a little lost.
Walt 2008.03.31, 08:38PM —
I would bump-up the lightness of your effects for the "F" and maybe even the "l"
one way to do so would be to apply the effect to each letter individually... the whole thing might just be too bright in the center... also avoidable if you split your two-headed combo into two individual pieces for sake of the bevel and lighting
Arsis 2008.04.01, 02:31AM —
I like the cleaner version best as well and would also look at expanding the lighting across to offer more brightness on the F and L.
Not sold on the colour treatment. Perhaps it would work better without colour... twould also translate to B&W print better if that's relevant.
arigato 2008.04.01, 11:14AM —
Call me nuts but I think the double-headed version looks like heraldry, and the font just doesn't go with that impression. I also don't see the Thundercats-looking head gone.
I agree with Walt, doing each letter seperately might not make you lose your ends in black on black.... or maybe you could do more of a "true" metallic effect. Word of warning - don't get too caught up in the faux finis version, trying to reproduce that at different sizes will be a lot messier than simple black & white. Also, it's always a good idea to stick with vectors - if you want to do a metallic effect I would strongly suggest doing it using illustrator gradients and put in your reflective points/ shadows in by hand - they will reproduce better.
