Photoshop never ceases to amaze me...
there is just so much to learn and so little time
I had heard about the potential ability for isolation and/or control over area-specific jpeg compression quality quite a few years ago... but never once actually saw or found in Photoshop how it was, or could be, done... not such a big deal, since most of what I do is for print
nevertheless, this is one of those elusive Photoshop things that evaded me
earlier today, quite by accident, my coworker stumbled onto one way with which one can isolate image areas and control jpeg compression, image quality and or damage...
probably not news to 'stoners...
In the Save for Web dialog, next to the Quality field is a little button that will go red [as shown below] when you rollover it...
which brings up the Modify Quality Setting dialog, which allows for Text and Vector objects to be isolated during compression preserving quality of Text and Vectors in jpegs... even more nifty, if that wasn't cool enough, you can make and Save Selections of areas in the image to be chosen via the Channel drop-down and protected from compression damage
might come in handy...
might be one of those things that everyone but me knew already

Odd that those options are not in the regular jpg dialogs - would come in handy.
Nice find Walt.

we also use pdf's for the most part, and I have to reduce anything I publish to our servers to below 250k... what a nightmare that is for us, I tell you—particularly when I have to deal with stuff my coworkers put a great deal of design-time into making stuff look great for print... I've got some good settings to use now, but the quality in some areas just sucks—but hey

I'd say that you've found a 12st virgin Walt. I haven't heard anyone mention that before, not here anyway. Maybe they speak about it in the [sekrit] forum [/sekrit] but certainly not out here.
Nice find mate!

For real. I am almost exclusively a print guy, but that's a nice little tip. There are opportunities for me to use that little trick, every now and then.
Plus, who doesn't like having some extra PS knowledge!?
