Lilly our 8 year old Basset hound took herself off a walk at lunch time today (as she is wont to do).
She was gone longer than usual and when she returned she was walking very slowly.
Judging by the dirt/scuff marks on her I thought that she had been hit by a car or lorry as there is a fairly busy road nearby.
She didn't seem to have any broken bones but I feared internal bleeding.
Long story short, I took her to the local vets who referred me a much larger practice in the departmental capital about an hour away.
X-rays and ultrasound-scans revealed her chest cavity is full of liquid, her heart and lungs are literally swimming in fluid.
They're keeping her in for obversation overnight before draining the fluid from her chest - they're not sure what's causing of the fluid.
She is in a very serious condition and may not make it through the night or the procedure to the drain fluid.
She is such a loving dog with such a huge heart - the house is empty without her here and she will leave a big hole in our family if she doesn't pull through.
Come on Lilly - you can pull through this.

Oh, I am so sorry. I send good doggie vibes. And a prayer that everything will work out fine.

oh man, that's so upsetting.
I really hope she gets better, we'll cross everything for her.

so sorry to hear of your poor Lilly's condition.
thoughts and prayers to you, Lilly and your family
sadly, it reminds me of our dog Rooney who passed a few years ago
we really had no idea of any problem before his passing, except upon reflection later we remember that he had been drinking much more water than normal... one sunday morning, I remember gathering him up for a walk around the block before it got too warm, and we got just across the street and he started vomitting, not too uncommon for a dog to puke, but he went into a bad way. fast.
we took him to the vet and the first diagnosis was intestinal blockage, they put him on IV's and observed for a day and then went into surgery where it was discovered he too was filled with fluid—and without any blockage
the post-mortem diagnosis was diabetes insipidus (DI)

I'd be sick if this were happening to one of my dogs. I'll be throwing all of the good vibes I can muster your way.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts/wishes/vibes.
She's a fighter - when she was a pup (newborn) she had some nasty disease (I forget the name of it - I think its a parvo variation) as she was from a puppy farm (that has been subsequently closed) and the original owner nursed her for 3 weeks - bottle feeding, cleaning and washing her every 3 hours - when the vet had said she would maybe last 48 hrs. Lilly pulled thru but the owner had a debilitating disease herself which is why we have Lilly in the first place - we rehomed her cos the owner couldn't cope with a puppy.
The hardest part was coming home tonight and Harmonie asking "Where Lilly? Where? Where?"
Both the kids love Lilly and she loves them - it just destroyed me.
