On a serious note, people that use this "English as the official language" as a passive aggressive vehicle trying to further their xenophobic agenda, make my blood boil.

that reminds me that I need to find some good spanish classes as I've always felt a bit lame that I don't speak one of the languages of my country.

I reckon there'd be a half dozen ppl at work who can speak spanish. I didn't realise it was so popular.

You do- English.
I thought most countries had an official language.

In Soviet Canuckistan we only got our languages made official in 1969, and people are still bitching about it... like there's some inherent disadvantage to speaking more than one language or something.

I think it would be much less confusing if there was only one language, whatever language that was, don't you?
Kind of like phone and cable companies. Damn you Reagan!

But Spanish is just as American. I'd bet there are very few Americans who can't count to ten in Spanish, just from watching Sesame Street. It's spoken nearly everywhere and whether or not it's the "Offical" language you can't change how people use it. I can't walk down the block without hearing at least three different conversations going on in Spanish, so yeah — I don't speak one of the major languages spoken in my country and that makes me feel a little ignorant.

Seriously, you don't have to feel ignorant by not knowing any Spanish.
StinkFist 2008.05.11, 05:55PM —
It's not like I'm consumed by it or anything, it's just that I hate not knowing what half the people on the street are talking about
It's more like I feel that I should have picked up at least one language other than English and not knowing Spanish, at least in a metropolitan area where it is spoken frequently, makes me wish I would have learned. In any case it'll be a moot point soon as I'm going to start taking some classes in June.
