I kinda thought that too... if it is possible to scratch tapes then why has it take 20+ years for someone to realise it. Surely this would have been discovered in the 80's?

That's totally legit. You can scratch tapes. There's like, lots of problems though. The tape wears out really fast, you have like, no control over basic cutting/scratching that he's doing, and it's not viable as something to do for a long period of time because you can skip forward/backward in time so you're stuck on the same section of tape forever.

I know you can move back and forth on the tape head, but without a mixing board it's not that clean - and he'd have to redo the electronics to get output from both decks at once.
