In p'shop if you're getting slowed down by system memory after working on a file for a long time, you can go edit>purge>undo/clipboard/histories/all and you can clear recent files by going open recent> clear recent. That frees up a lot of memory after a few hours working on print res files.
Is there some way in illustrator to do the same? I'm constantly getting insufficient memory errors and while simply restarting illustrator clears it, some way to do it in-program would be way handier.

my coworker, Michael, is much more familiar with Illustrator than I ...
when he gets back, I'll ask & see what he knows for ya...

he didn't know of anything like what you ask off the top...
both of us are more of the school of thought that simply shut down the app when or if it gets buggy or slows down

Yup.
I usually do an all kill on adobe apps about every two hours.
Guarantees I get up, stretch and walk around a bit.

It just seems odd that p'shop has it but illy don't.
As I suspected, however. I know illustrator pretty damn well, but it's always worth asking 'round this neck 'a the woods.

it's a logical question though, and one that's very valid for the type of work you use it for ari. It's definitely worth pursuing with Adobe. You really do need an Illo cache cleaner
